Genesis 4:17-5:24

Main Idea

The genealogies of Scripture are all about Jesus; they show us who we are and who we need.

Gen 4:17-22

The Common Grace of God

God bestows common grace upon his whole creation. His sovereign care includes the righteous and the wicked.

Gen 4:23-24, 5:21-24

The Culmination of Wickedness

Lamech is the seventh descendant from God in the line of Cain. His story is meant to reveal the ultimate destiny of the serpent’s seed: death. Lamech is juxtaposed with Enoch, who is the seventh descendant from God in the line of Seth. Enoch’s story reveals that the destiny of the seed of the woman is life.

Gen 4:25-5:24 (esp 4:26, 5:24)

The Commitments of the Righteous

We are all born in sin; we are the seed (offspring) of the serpent. We can only become righteous when we are born again by the seed of the woman. The marks of our new life include a commitment to call upon the Lord in worship and prayer and to walk with the lord in faithful obedience.
