Luke 2:1-20

Main Idea
Advent reminds us to worship.
Luke 2:1-7
There is an inevitability
to God’s work.
God can use anyone at anytime to accomplish his work.
  • God uses Caesar’s decree (2:1)
  • during Quirinius’ reign (2:2)
  • to get Joseph to Bethlehem (2:4),
  • with a very pregnant Mary (2:5),
  • who gives birth to Jesus (2:6)
  • and lays him in a manger (2:7).
Luke 2:8-12
There is an inevitability
to God’s worship
God desires an audience to see and celebrate his worth.
  • Shepherds are his audience (2:8).
  • God reveals himself (2:9a).
  • The shepherds are afraid (2:9b).
  • The angels arrive (2:10a):
  • they preach the gospel (2:10b);
  • they announce Christ (2:11-12);
  • and they worship God (2:13-14).
  • Then, the angels leave (2:15).
  • The shepherds go to Jesus (2:16).
  • They told their story (2:17),
  • and people worshipped (2:18-20):
    • The wondered (2:18)
    • They treasured (2:19)
    • They pondered (2:19)
    • They glorified (2:20)
    • They praised (2:20).
The story of Jesus reminds us to worship because God is working and he is worthy!
