Genesis 1:1-2:3

Main Idea
The Maker Makes.

Gen 1:1
Creation of the Cosmos

In the Beginning

  • Duration of time not instant in time

  • The Transcendent and Trinitarian God, Elohim

  • Nothing then something (ex nihilo)

  • “Heavens and Earth” is a merism

Gen 1:2-2:3
Formation of a Home

God creates everything but humanity in the beginning. After the beginning, God “makes” a particular “land” in seven literal 24-hour days. On the 6th day he creates humanity to live in that land as his image bearers.

Making and creating are two separate activities. This “land,” which is called Eden in chapter 2, is likely to be identified with the Promised Land.
